Samuel Bates settled on or near Bald Hill in what is now the
town of Scituate, then a part of Providence. The first record of him is in
______ when he buys land. His marriage is recorded in an almanac fro 1711 among
the “Fenner Papers” in the city hall, Providence. IN 1713 he conveys land to
brother-in-law Joseph Bagley. No clue to the birthplace or ancestry of Samuel
(1) Bates has been discovered.

Some tradition says that in addition to the seven named there
were three sons and four daughters. Combining both and accepting tradition
there are still one son and two daughters unaccounted for.
Order of births in both lists unknown.
John (2) died intestate in Scituate. His brother Nathan (2) administered
his estate. Miner sons Reuben (3) and James (3) chose as guardian their uncle
